Student Life
Athletics
At Heritage, we believe in educating the whole person, body, mind and spirit. Our Athletic Program is therefore an important part of the Heritage experience. We encourage our students to glorify Jesus Christ through participation and competition as they learn principles of teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, grace and humility. Our coaches emphasize participation, skills development, teamwork, fun, and healthy life habits that are glorifying to God.
Chapel and Spiritual Life
Heritage students gather for chapel twice a week, led by teachers, student groups, or guest speakers. Chapel is designed to orient our community towards worship and the Word of God. We often sing hymns and choruses as well as hear encouraging talks and devotions. In addition to chapel, students meet once a week in small, gender-specific groups by house for prayer and encouragement.
Each year, we choose a spiritual life theme from Scripture which centers our school community’s devotional and spiritual life for the academic year. Students, teachers, chapel speakers, and coaches are encouraged to follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance in emphasizing our theme in their walk, work, service, ministry and leadership. The 2024-25 theme is from Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him!”
House System
Our House System enriches school spirit and encourages student initiative, leadership, and responsibility through community service, social events and competitions throughout the year. Each student and faculty member is assigned to one of four Houses – Humility, Honesty, Honor, or Hospitality – and remains a member of that House until they leave the school.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. (NHS Website)
Heritage has an active NHS chapter that inducts up to 15 students each year. Candidates are initially considered based on scholarship (3.5 GPA or higher), after which they must write an essay on their understanding of servant leadership. Students must also demonstrate leadership within the school and/or in the broader community.
Members of the Heritage NHS meet bi-monthly. NHS members participate in at least one service project and are expected to continue their leadership and scholarship to graduate as a NHS member.
Events and Traditions
Each year, our students engage in various events to foster learning, community, and friendship. We begin the school year with an all school overnight retreat. At Thanksgiving, we pause for a wonderful community feast. We host two choir concerts and an amazing Shakespeare or Shakespeare-like production. During the school year, students also organize two formal dances, which are supervised by parent volunteers.
Academic presentations are a big part of the Spring. In April, families gather to watch high school students present their 30- and 40-hour projects. To finish our year, our graduating seniors present their senior thesis. During these presentations, students showcase their work and findings, inviting the entire community to join and celebrate their achievements.
